The grading system at City College Milwaukee uses A, B, C, and D as passing grades. AU, I, NC, or WP do not carry weight for calculatEach course has its own schedule for exams, which should be laid out in the course syllabus or class schedule at the start of the course. Each faculty member will determine and announce to each class the specific implications of an unexcused absence from exams. Individual faculty members will determine whether an absence from an exam is excused or unexcused. ing GPA (Grade Point Average). An Incomplete grade is to be made up within three weeks or it becomes an F. A WF is calculated into a students GPA when it is the result of breaking the attendance policy. Credits transferred from other colleges determine course completion but are not calculated as part of a student's GPA at City College Milwaukee. ExaminationsEach course has its own schedule for exams, which should be laid out in the course syllabus or class schedule at the start of the course. Each faculty member will determine and announce to each class the specific implications of an unexcused absence from exams. Individual faculty members will determine whether an absence from an exam is excused or unexcused. AttendanceAttendance in classes and chapel is highly encouraged. Chapel is an opportunity for the City College Milwaukee community to gather to¬gether for worship and prayer, and to encourage one another. All chapels are student led, so attendance at chapel supports and en¬courages those students who are a part of the chapel ministry. Students pay for their education; missing classes will cause students to lose out on valuable material and information that will help them in their exams. Professors will drop students who fail to attend classes according to the following schedule. Students will be dropped on the seventh absence for classes that meet twice a week, on the fourth absence for classes that meet once a week, and on the second absence of seminar classes that meet once a month. A student who is dropped from a class will not be readmitted. If the drop occurs during the first ten weeks of the semester, the student will receive a "W"; if it is after the tenth week, the student will receive a "WF" for the course, which will affect the student's GPA. If the professor is not in the classroom at the start of the class period, students should wait fifteen minutes from the scheduled start of the class before leaving.
Incompletes and ExtensionsMake-up exams and papers to remove incomplete grades may be permitted by the instructor and the academic dean depending upon each situation. Extensions must be requested in writing before the end of the term and may be granted by consent of the instructor and academic dean. The student will then have three weeks to complete the work before the "I" for incomplete becomes an "F", a failing grade on the permanent record. Students who take a Carlson course inde¬pendently have six months to complete the course. If a student needs more time, the student must file an extension request with the Carlson Institute and pay them a $25 extension fee. Repeating of CoursesA student may attempt to improve his or her grade in a course by repeating the course. Each grade is entered on the transcript and used for the appropriate semester grade point average. However, in calculating the cumulative grade point average, only the highest grade is used, and the hours are counted only once. Courses re¬peated at other institutions may not be used to raise grades. AuditingWhen auditing a class no grade or credit is given. Students auditing classes are not required to do assignments or take exams. A student may not claim credit for the course at a later date without officially enrolling and completing that course. A student may change from audit to credit upon submitting a written request to the Dean's office for permission to change. The change of status from audit to credit would involve an official admission process. This conversion from an audit to a credit course may not be performed after the beginning of the third week of classes. A financial adjustment for this change will be made. A student cannot change from credit to audit status without first officially withdrawing from the course after having first received permission from that professor to do so. PlagiarismPlagiarism is considered a very serious offense at City College Milwaukee. The use of another person's academic work without proper citation may result in serious disciplinary action including the possibility of dismissal. Students who are caught plagiarizing or cheating will have a personal interview with the professor of the course in which the incident oc¬curred to evaluate the alleged infraction and any extenuating circum¬stances. A student who is found guilty of plagiarism or cheating may receive an "F" on the paper or exam or the professor may choose to drop the student from the class and receive an "F" for the course. To drop a student from the course, the professor and student will also have to meet with the Dean of Academic Affairs.
Adding and Dropping ClassesStudents must complete an add-drop form to make changes in their schedule. A student is allowed to add a class before the third day of class. A class dropped during the first two full weeks of class is not entered on the transcript. A student dropping a class with a passing grade will receive a WP (Withdraw Passing) on his/her transcript. Otherwise, it will be a WF (Withdraw Failing). Withdrawing from the CollegeTo officially withdraw from a course or from City College Milwaukee, a student is required to: 1. Secure a withdrawal form from the Registrar's Office. 2. Complete the form with required signatures. 3. Return completed forms to the Registrar's Office with the appropriate fee payment. Refunds are calculated on the date the completed form is submitted to the Registrar's Office. A student who leaves the College without officially withdrawing is responsible for his/her financial and academic commitments to the college. Without officially withdrawing from the college, all grades for that term become F on the student's transcript.
Grievance Rights and ProcedureThe college subscribes to the principle of equal educational opportu¬nity. Any member of the college community who has a grievance should petition in writing to the Dean of Academic Affairs, who will work with the petitioner for a resolution of the problem. If the issue is not resolved at this level, an appeal may be made to the executive director of City on a Hill. Cancellation of a Class or ProgramThe college reserves the right to cancel any class for which the enrollment or space is not sufficient. All classes required for existing program completion will be offered at appropriate times. Statement of Non-DiscriminationCity College Milwaukee does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national and ethnic origin or handicap, with regard to the admission and employment policies, the educational, financial aid or other programs and privileges to the students at the college.
