Academic Year The academic year consists of two 15 week semesters (Fall and Spring) and two 6 week summer terms. This creates a 42 week academic year calendar. A complete academic calendar can be found at the end of this catalog.
Academic CreditEach credit represents 50 minutes of classroom instruction. Three credit classes meet on a single day of the week block for 2 1/2 hours plus a 15 minute break or two days a week for 75 minutes each day. Two credit courses meet for 100 minutes in a block course or for 50 minutes each day in a two day pattern.Academic Credit for Field Ministry Supervised field ministry is part of the academic curriculum of City College Milwaukee. Practicums are divided into thirty hours of field ministry and twenty hours of discipleship discussion groups. These fifty hours constitute one semester credit. Students taking eight or more credits must complete one credit of field ministry per semester up to the total of practicum credits required by the student's degree program. Practicum grades are included in a student's overall Grade Point Average (GPA). Students select their practicums each semes¬ter, but they cannot take the same practicum more than twice.
Academic Advising
Faculty provide students with academic counseling which includes advising students on course levels (audit, diploma, City College Milwaukee credit, and N. C. U. credit). During the Registration proc¬ess each semester, faculty members review a student's prior course completion and recommend course selections to enable students to progress toward graduation.
The Academic Load To complete the programs within the one or two year time frame, students should carry a class load of 12-15 credits and 1 field ministry (practicum) credit for each semester. Those taking less than 15 credits, will also need to take courses during the summer sessions to complete the program within one or two years.
Carlson Courses and City College Courses
City College Milwaukee is not yet an accredited institution. In order to provide our students with transferable, accredited coursework, we are obtaining most of our course materials from the Carlson Institute, the distance learning program of North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We recommend that students who plan to go on to a four-year college to obtain a bachelors degree take the courses for Carlson credit since these credits will more readily transfer to other colleges and universities. Those students who are only interested in obtaining the Associate of Arts degree in Urban Ministry may take the courses for City College Milwaukee credit.
